Our step-by-step guide will help you to contact and meet with your local parliamentary candidates to complete our climate education report card with them.
Click through the steps to find resources, such as emails to send, our climate education report card and a script template to guide you in your converation with candidates.
Together, we will meet as many parliamentary candidates as possible to make sure that the MPs who will represent us in the next Parliament will take action to improve climate education in schools.
Remain kind and courteous with any candidate you’re engaging with, as this will make them more likely to listen and take forward our asks. Yes, it is disappointing when people don’t support what you believe in or show you respect; but generally, if they’ve agreed to meet you, they will listen and be nice to you, too.
This is key! Although the fact that they have agreed to meet with you shows they are sympathetic to your cause, some candidates may question your opinions.
Noting down some statistics may help support your argument, and you can use the Teach the Future Debate Sheet to prepare for common questions from the candidate. You might also want to research the candidate to see if they have made any previous commitments on climate education, climate change and/or youth voice.
Believe in yourself! You have every right to be here! You have worked hard to reach this point, it’s okay to be nervous but try to relax, take your time and be confident in your abilities. If it helps (and is possible), take someone with you, whether that’s a volunteer, family member or a responsible friend.
If you’re meeting a candidate, try as hard as possible to arrive on time. It is far more likely that the candidate will end up being late, but make sure it’s not you! Candidates, politicians, especially MPs, tend to be VERY busy people and do not like to waste time. If something unavoidable comes up, make sure to let them or their office know with a quick phone call or email.

You can use our debate sheet to prepare for any possible questions from the candidates and you can definitely bring notes too. You may also want to research the candidate to see if they have made any previous commitments on climate education, climate change and/or youth voice.
