Candidate's Responses

  1. Do you support the integration of climate change throughout every subject?

I, along with One Leicester, support the integration of climate change throughout every subject. This is a climate emergency that is going to massively impact future generations. We must equip young people with the knowledge and skills to fight climate change now and in the future.
  2. Do you support the teaching on solutions for climate change, as well as the causes and impacts?

Solutions for Climate Change are essential knowledge for everyone. We must be clear about how we got here (i.e causes), how it is going to change our world (i.e impact) and most importantly, how we fix this urgently. The anti-climate change lobby is strong but the conversation must be focussed on solutions and innovation in the solutions.
  3. Do they support more training for all teachers around the climate crisis?

Yes, I believe that if we want to have impactful education around the Climate Crisis, we must ensure that those with the responsibility for imparting this knowledge are well equipped with infrmation, facts, solutions and resources to effectively get their message across. This will have increased benefits as both young people and teachers will be informed and well-placed to make a difference.
  4. Do they support more money being spent to upgrade schools so they are carbon neutral?

We need more investment in schools in general. Some easy wins include rooftop renewables and energy-efficient windows. I have overseen some of this work at a school I'm a governor at but it is not being done fast enough or equally across the country. We need a concerted effort to make this a reality over the next couple of years.
  5. Do they support more green skills being taught in job-related education?

This is crucial. One of my pledges is to create jobs in the Green Economy. To be able to do this and showcase its value, we need young people to be equipped with the appropriate skills to have an impact. I think green skills must be taught as far and wide as possible to help young people innovate and be more employable in the long-term.
