Candidate's Responses

  1. Do you support the integration of climate change throughout every subject?

Yes, we need better education regarding climate change in schools. It needs to be done in a way that engages pupils, so teachers needs to also be given climate literacy training so that they fully understand the topic they are teaching. There is a danger that if the planning is not done properly, pupils may just have the reaction "we're not doing climate change again!"
  2. Do you support the teaching on solutions for climate change, as well as the causes and impacts?

Yes, particularly the need for behaviour change at a national and global scale
  3. Do they support more training for all teachers around the climate crisis?

Yes, this is essential. If climate change is taught by teachers that do not understand the seriousness of the topic, this will get transmitted to the pupils.
  4. Do they support more money being spent to upgrade schools so they are carbon neutral?

Yes, all buildings need to be upgraded to get to as near zero emissions as possible. This will be expensive initially but will result in ongoing savings. Retrofitting schools will be a very public message that building energy use is important and will be a good way of educating people about building energy use.
  5. Do they support more green skills being taught in job-related education?

Yes, the retrofit sector has the potential to create thousands of skilled satisfying careers, and there is a lack of installers at currently in this sector, so we do need to upscale the green building sector.
