Candidate's Responses

  1. Do you support the integration of climate change throughout every subject?

Yes. I believe some of the most successful primary schools are now moving to a project-based approach where maths and English are learnt in the course of learning about the world. it certainly makes sense to teach climate change as a major project, and use this as the context in which to learn a lot of geography and science, and probably some English as well. In the course of working on this project pupils will get a chance to expand their maths and English.
  2. Do you support the teaching on solutions for climate change, as well as the causes and impacts?

Yes. My local MAT primary school invited me to come in and talk to year 4 (I think), with a link to two other schools, same year, to cover this subject and answer questions on it. I found that these 9 year olds were well aware of causes, impacts, and solutions.
  3. Do they support more training for all teachers around the climate crisis?

Yes carbon literacy should be taught to all teachers. For those who are aware, it will reinforce their confidence in the subject and provide an update. For those who are less aware, it's even more important.
  4. Do they support more money being spent to upgrade schools so they are carbon neutral?

Yes investment, especially in insulation and other measures is usually worthwhile over the life time of the building. It certainly helps if schools explain to pupils what they are doing, and why.
  5. Do they support more green skills being taught in job-related education?

Yes. In the economy as a whole some resources may have to be diverted from traditional industries, and re-orientated towards sustainability. I think we are going to need more electricians and fewer fashion retailers and fizzy drinks manufacturing jobs (for example).
