Launch day

During the months of lockdown we worked hard to get everything ready for the launch of our Scottish campaign. On the 6th of July 2020 we officially went live. As well as this, we wrote to John Swinney, Scotland’s education minister, asking for a green recovery for education. We also wrote to Nicola Sturgeon about our campaign and our 4 asks. In the future we look forward to having an in-person meeting with members of the Scottish parliament, but for the meanwhile we are launching this amazing campaign online.

Establishing First Comms

We launched our campaign with a letter to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon outlining our asks and campaign after discussion with Pete Higgins from LFS Scotland. This resulted in communications with Liam Cahill who is responsible for learning for sustainability policy and the offer of a virtual meeting about learning for sustainability.

Green recovery for education

Ahead of the UK government spring budget, Teach the Future Scotland decided to launch a campaign lobbying the Chancellor and Cabinet for a green recovery for education. A green recovery for education (GR4E) is a campaign asking for funding for green school retrofitting. This would assist in reducing carbon emissions, while creating new green jobs and equitably sharing investment.

To do this, we coordinated a letter writing campaign, nationwide, directed towards MSPs and local representatives as well as sending a letter to the Deputy First Minister for Education and Skills - John Swinney MSP

Banner drop

12/07/2020

7 members of the TtF Scotland team participated in a banner drop outside of the Scottish Parliament. This was part of acknowledging the end of our launch week and week of action on social media with a press release. It was the first time the team had met up together for an action and it was a great day to celebrate the campaign progressing.

Asking MSPs for Support

In August, the Teach the Future Scotland team wrote an email to MSPs, requesting their support for the campaign. This email, which explains the asks of our campaign and explains why students in Scotland feel the need for this campaign, will be sent out to all the MSPs in the Scottish parliament, with as many as possible being sent from constituents to their own MSP.

Teach the Future Scotland began it’s campaign launched by sending it’s letter, signed by 3 of our education advocates, asking the government about green school retrofitting. We are happy to announce that we got a response from the office of the cabinet secretary and Deputy First Minister on 14th of August which has led us to set up a meeting about preliminary discussion about our campaign.
