Curriculum for a Changing Climate

The national curriculum has not been substantively or systematically reviewed for at least eight years, and doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon. We don’t have time to wait!

Using a 'tracked changes' methodology, we are showing what a new curriculum for England could look like by suggesting where and how the national curriculum for all primary subjects and the main secondary subjects can be amended to include sustainability and climate education. It goes beyond just learning facts about climate change, instead providing guidance on how to engage with the climate crisis so that young people feel empowered to participate in tackling it, rather than feeling hopeless and scared.

The report created, works alongside our Climate Education Bill for England and Wales, to show leaders exactly how and why climate education shouldn’t be siloed into certain subjects like Science and Geography. Instead, it should be mandatory and integrated across all subjects, for example learning about food security in food tech, how the language we use reflects changing relationships with nature, or thinking about the sustainability of materials used in art and design tech.

All documents are listed in our resources at the bottom of this page, including subject-specific documents, a full report and presentation.
